About us

Frankfurter Buchmesse Join our group and start a discussion: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/42948 Once a year, the Frankfurter Buchmesse becomes the Global City of Ideas: the most important international trading place for content, from novels and children’s books to academic databases. Publishing professionals from around the world meet here with partners from the technology sector and from related creative industries, such as film and games; it is here that new cooperation agreements and business models find their first inspiration. At the same time, the Book Fair is also a huge cultural event which, for five days every year, turns Frankfurt on the Main into the centre of the international media world. Every year, about 7,300 exhibitors from more than 100 countries, around 286,000 visitors, more than 4,000 events and 10,000 accredited journalists and bloggers all combine to make the Frankfurter Buchmesse the biggest trade fair for the international publishing industry. The number of international visitors is constantly growing. One reason for this is that the Book Fair has long maintained an ardent commitment to the idea of “crossing borders”. For more than 20 years, in its B2B activities, Frankfurt has been open to the digital transition and the new players this brings with it: film and games professionals, business developers, IT specialists, investors, start-ups, bloggers and many more besides, now feel well and truly at home in Frankfurt. And the Book Fair is constantly developing new services and products, such as the Self-Publishing Area, which was launched to great success in 2013, and the Frankfurt Hot Spots – the meeting places for digital innovators.

Book fair venue: Frankfurter Buchmesse and Messe Frankfurt extend contract until 2028 Contract extension focuses on post-pandemic normality / Continuation of a good tradition since 1951 On 3 May 2024, representatives of Frankfurter Buchmesse and Messe Frankfurt signed the extension of the contract until the end of 2028. This continues a good tradition: the largest international book fair has been held in the halls of Messe Frankfurt since 1951 – even during the pandemic years and under challenging conditions. The new contractual agreement focuses on post-pandemic normality and secures Frankfurt as an international trade fair location. In addition, both contracting parties prioritise the issue of sustainability in the staging of the event. "Frankfurter Buchmesse is one of the world's largest meeting places for open, international, social and political discourse. This makes the event invaluable for Frankfurt, the cradle of democracy in Germany. Especially in light of this year's 75th anniversary of the German constitution, I am delighted that Frankfurter Buchmesse has decided to remain loyal to this location", says Mike Josef, Lord Mayor of the City of Frankfurt am Main. "I am very pleased to be able to formalise the cooperation between Frankfurter Buchmesse and Messe Frankfurt for the coming years. The cultural city of Frankfurt, Messe Frankfurt and Frankfurter Buchmesse belong together. Frankfurt is Germany's most international city, and we are and will remain Frankfurt's most international trade fair", says Juergen Boos, Director of Frankfurter Buchmesse. Uwe Behm, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt, adds: "Frankfurter Buchmesse is not only a unique event that contributes to the city's global brand and reputation, but also contributes to the prosperity of Frankfurt and the entire region through the turnover generated by hotels, restaurants, taxi companies and many other service providers. We are delighted that Messe Frankfurt can continue to provide its exhibition centre and services in this way."

Today, International Press Freedom Day, marks the start of "Freedom of Expression Week". Until 10 May, the anniversary of the book burnings, the project will provide important impetus for the socio-political debate in Germany and highlight the importance of freedom of expression and lively debate for a democratic society. As part of #WdM2024, the Frankfurter Buchmesse is putting international voices from the publishing industry centre stage. In cooperation with International Publishers Association - IPA, we wanted to know: What does freedom of expression mean to you personally? What do you perceive as the greatest challenge to freedom of expression? What can publishers from around the world do to promote freedom of expression? In the coming week, we will be sharing the answers of our colleagues from Turkey, Spain, the USA, the UK and other countries on the Frankfurter Buchmesse's social media channels. ℹ The initiators of the campaign week are the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels e.V., the newly founded Freedom of Expression Foundation and the Frankfurter Agenturallianz.

🎬 It’s beyond Books - Books invite readers to change their perspective, to become part of a story with their own interpretation. And they can be even more: With their worlds and characters, they are the origin for adaptations in other media. 📚 🎬 The Book-to-Screen area at the Frankfurter Buchmesse emphasises the potential that books or individual characters offer for film, series or screen adaptations. In addition to the Book-to-Screen Day, which takes place on the Friday of the fair (18 October) as part of #fbm24, we are also involved in film throughout the year. We are cooperating for the 11th time with "Shoot the Book!" in Cannes. The format of the Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes has developed into a multi-day event and has been expanded to include the formats of an adaptation masterclass and the networking event ‘Shoot the Book! Rendezvous’ 💕📘 networking event. ℹ This year, "Shoot the Book!" will take place from 16-17 May in Cannes. You can find the titles taking part in the pitch in the slides. With Sybille Ruge's thriller ‘9mm Cut’ (Suhrkamp Verlag), a German title is also entering the race.
